Insert Accented letters with Word’s insert function:

  3. After that, a drop-down menu appears and click on the ‘more symbols’ option.
  4. The symbol window that opens displays a huge number of characters to choose from. Keep the font menu as ‘normal text’ and sear4ch for the subset accent you want from the options. For easiness such as if you want French or Spanish accent letters, go ahead and choose the ‘Latin -1 supplement’ option from the ‘subset’ option.
  5. Once you find the accent letter you are searching to click on the ‘insert’ button and your letter will be inserted on the text. This method works really well if you want to insert accent letters very rarely, but for fast inserting, there are different methods-
  • Insert accented letters with keyboard shortcuts- Word has lots of great keyboard shortcuts and shortcuts associated with accented characters are no exception. In the ‘more symbol’ option in ‘symbol’ option, there is a shortcut option in the below for accented letters, thereby learning another method of how to put an accent over a letter.
  • These shortcuts follow a formula most of the time so that you don’t have to memorize it all. You will use the ctrl or Shift key along with the accent key on your keyboard, followed by a quick press of the letter. They are easier to use than the ASCII code to create accents. For example-
  • Press control + `, then the letter to give a grave accent. Hold the control key down, and then tap the accent key near the top left corner of your keyboard. Release the keys and then select the desired letter to accent.
  • Press control + ‘, then the letter to add an acute accent. Hold control, and then tap the apostrophe key. Release the keys and then select the desired letter to accent.
  • Press control, shift, and 8, then the letter to add a circumflex accent. Hold down the control and shift keys then tap the 6 keys. Release the keys and select the desired letter to accent.
  • Press shift + control + ~, then the letter to add a tilde accent. Same as that of a grave accent but remember to hold down the shift key to give a tilde accent. Release the keys and then select the desired letter to accent.
  • Press shift + control+ then the letter to add an umlaut accent. You must hold down the shift key to select the colon as opposed to the semicolon. Release the keys and now select the desired letter.
  • To capitalize, simply type the shift key straight after typing the control + (choice), then type the letter. It will automatically capitalize.
  • Insert Accented letters with ASCII codes- Well there is always a geeky way to do anything, same with this too. If you use lots of accented letters over time in your write up it’s better to memorize a few ASCII codes to make things quicker.

The American Standard Code for Information Interchange (ASCII), is an encoding system that provides a way to represent certain characters using respective code. The code arises from the recorder and expands the set of symbols and characters already used in telegraphy during the time of 1969. This way slowly more and more codes were added in this system within due course of time. Almost all computer systems today use the ASCII code to represent characters.

 We are not going to provide the full ASCII codes as there are hundreds and it’s quite impossible to learn them all. Instead, we learn a few basics and give you shortcodes to quickly take care of those accented letters. For this trick, we have to keep the num lock on. Most keyboards have an indicator light to let you know when num lock is enabled. To enter the ASCII code all you have to do is hold down your Alt key while typing out a numeric code on your numeric keypad.

 Learning the accent codes can take some practice as there are many to remember. You can make a cheat sheet to keep by your computer so you can reference it quickly if you need to use accents often. For example, the code for ‘à’ is 130 that is held on the alt key and type 130 in number pad with num lock on and then release the keys.

The example of few ASCII code is given below-

  1. Hold Alt and type the following codes to get grave accents:

 à = 0224; À = 0192

 è = 0232; È = 0200

 ì = 0236; Ì = 0204

ò = 0242; Ò = 0210

 ù = 0249; Ù = 0217

  • Type the following codes to get acute accents:  á = 0225; Á = 0193

é = 0233; É = 0201

í = 0237; Í = 0205

ó = 0243; Ó = 0211

ú = 0250; Ú = 0218

ý = 0253; Ý = 0221

  • Type the following codes to get circumflex accents:    â = 0226; Â = 0194

 ê = 0234 Ê = 0202

 î = 0238; Î = 0206

ô = 0244; Ô = 0212

 û = 0251; Û = 0219

  • Type the following codes to get tilde accents: ã = 0227; Ã = 0195

ñ = 0241; Ñ = 0209

õ = 0245; Õ = 0213

  • Type the following codes to get umlaut accents:

ä = 0228; Ä = 0196

ë = 0235; Ë = 0203

ï = 0239; Ï = 0207

ö = 0246; Ö = 0214

ü = 0252; Ü = 0220

ÿ = 0255; Ÿ = 0159

Autocorrect keyboard characters to special characters- There is also a feature called autocorrect that could automatically insert accented characters when you type certain letter combinations. In the symbols window, select the character for which you want to set up an autocorrect function for.

Click the ‘autocorrect’ button at the bottom left. In the ‘replace’ box, type the characters that you want to trigger the autocorrect replacement. When you are done, click the ‘Add’ button, and then the ‘ok’ button. But this method is quite cumbersome if you want multiple accented characters in a single word.
